League Winners Medal, 1890-91
Everton F.C. were founder members of The Football League in 1888 and won their first League Championship three years later. On winning the 1890/91 League Championship, the Football League did not present Everton with any medals. As a result Everton produced this medal for their Championship winning players, which they received along with a cash bonus.
The medals were presented to the players along with the League Championship trophy at a club concert in May 1891.
The medal features the city of Liverpool’s emblem, a liver bird, to honour the home of Everton F.C. The liver bird is now used by Liverpool F.C. on their club badge, but Evertonians are proud to claim the liver bird was first used on their 1890/91 League Championship medal – a year before Liverpool F.C. were formed.
